Why this artist?
I know some songs and a friend of mine wanted to go. So why not?
It was my first visit to the Lanxess Arena Cologne. I am not a huge fan of concerts in arenas, but I have to say that I liked the Lanxess arena. It’s large, but not too large. There are enough entrances so you don’t have to wait forever, even though the security checks were very thorough. We had seats not too far away from the stage. The seats on the circle go up pretty high and I wouldn’t want to sit all he way up there.
The concert started slightly before the announced time of eight pm. Lewis Capaldi, a Scottish guy, played for about 25 minutes and reminded me strongly of both Ed Sheehan and James Arthur. He has a very powerful voice and I really liked his music.
Sam Smith came on stage around nine and played the first half of his first song „Burning“ in the semi-dark; one spot was on him so you could only see his silhouette while the rest remained dark.
The third song ‚ I’m not the only one‘ was the first song I knew before the concert. ‚Nirvana’ I dind’t know before, but it became one of my favourites of the night.
Sam Smith didn’t talk too much during the show, but when he did he really had something to say. So when he announced ‚Scars‘ as the most personal song he’s ever written I started filming. The song really got me though, because it hit too close to home and I had to stop filming after the first chorus. I don’t think that has ever happened before.
There were some pretty dramatic moments during the show and at one point even the singer laughed about it, noting ‚ Wow, that was fucking dramatic‘ after the song.
HIM is just an amazing song: Both because of the powerful choir elements and the lyrics. The fact that they ended the song with a rainbow of lights made it even better. Maybe when more and more artists spread the message that Love is Love maybe it will finally sink in? (Newest song in that respect is Anne-Marie’s ‚Perfect‘: I didn’t see that one coming!).
‚Too good at goodbyes’ was as amazing as expected and just like in the car I had to sing along.
Sam Smith played one set of encores consisting of ‚Palace‘, ‚Stay with me‘ and ‚Pray‘. He ended the show it began, with a single spot on him as he sang the last words and then slowly vanished under the stage.
Take a class how to start your car on a steep uphill street before you park there, because they placed a traffic light right at the steepest point of the parking exit and we rolled quite a bit back while trying to get the car to more forward. Maybe I should rent a car with a four-wheel drive next time we go there…
As much as I like the Lanxess Arena 2,80€ for a Pretzel and 4,50€ for a water is complete madness! However parking is not that expensive. 5,50€ for the whole day when there is an event.
Do it again?
Yes! Sam Smith is so much better live, in my opinion. And way less depressing 😉
